Respecting the “Man Cave”

Sunday, February 14, 2010

How many of you have a “man cave” in your house?…you know, that one space in the house that belongs solely to “the man”. Maybe it’s a den, or a manly room to build manly stuff and do manly things (can you tell I’m not a man?).

As you know, I’m not married, but I do have a man (in training) in the house…my 15 year old son. I like to call him “Coolio”.

When he was little I created the most adorable room for him. My little 19 or 20 year old self painted his room one of those new fangled beige colors (this was 1995 people… “beige” was a fairly new concept…at least to me since we were still coming out of the ‘80s), and I picked out cute blue and white striped bedding and a fun little street rug (kind of like the one below).

But just like you can only pick out your kids’ clothes for so long, you can only be in charge of how their bedroom looks for a certain amount of time…and then they takeover. I’m okay with this.

When we moved into the Cottage I let my son pick out his own bedding. It was a striped duvet set on clearance at Pottery Barn (it’s called “Jasper” if anyone wants to look for it on Ebay).

It stayed on the bed for a little while, but where is this bedding set now?

Apparently “duvet covers” aren’t all that practical in the mind of a 15 year old manchild. Nor are “pillow shams”…go figure.

What is practical to a 15 year old manchild? A comfortable, soft, well used quilt. I’ve gently pointed out (about a MILLION times) that it has flowers on it, but he doesn’t care because it’s super comfy. Huh…function over form…what an interesting concept.

Also practical to a 15 year old are random sports posters tacked to the wall. I was able to frame one of them…but I couldn’t sell the kid on framing and artfully displaying the others…again, go figure.

And the most practical thing in the man cave? An emerald green velour recliner purchased for $10 from the neighbors across the street. Yes, nothing says man cave like a recliner.

Do I secretly want to sneak into his room when he’s out of town and throw some paint on the walls, add new bedding, and artfully arrange his posters? Um yes. Will I…no. And here’s why:

I respect my son’s need to create his own space that reflects him. I respect his need to have a space in our painted, pillow filled, artfully arranged house that makes him feel like a man. As long as he keeps it clean and keeps the door unlocked I’m good.

What about you? Do you have a “man cave” in your house?

I’m in Love – With a Polyvore Room

Friday, February 12, 2010

I’m in love…with a fictional room I created in Polyvore. Yes, I should probably set my sights higher, but I’ll take what I can get :). I was, you know…passing some time on a slow afternoon…and wham-o…instant love.

Okay, it’s not earth shatteringly, magazine worthy beautiful, but it’s very me – a little traditional, but still light, airy and kind of playful. Hmmm, now if I only had a place to recreate it in my house. Hmmmm…

What about you? Have you ever created a “fictional room” or seen a room in a magazine that you just had.to.have?

Is it Spring Yet?

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Is anyone else really tired of winter? Oh how I’m dreaming of warm, leisurely sunny days full of bbq’s and magazine reading on the deck. So, I thought I’d share some lovely patio photos to warm us up a little today. It doesn’t hurt to dream, right?

Ahhh, just a little longer. Stay warm everyone!

Blissdom 2010 Recap

Monday, February 8, 2010

I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what to say about Blissdom. My head is still kind of spinning…not from booze mind you…but from trying to process the things I learned and the conversations I had with the amazing women I met…okay, okay, and I did have a glass of wine or two :).  Take a look.

I had a great dinner Friday night with Layla (The Lettered Cottage) and Sarah (Thrifty Decor Chick). They are just too cute (and smart) for words.

I goofed around Saturday night in downtown Nashville with Sarah and Centsational Kate. And I’m sorry, but three fun gals, fried pickles dipped in ranch dressing, live music and line dancing = one heck of a good time. Although, I was winded after one song. Me thinks I need to hit the treadmill…especially after eating “fried pickles”.

Are we not the biggest goofs you’ve ever seen?

I couldn’t resist taking this shot of one tall drink of water with two southern babes on his arm(s). I have no idea who the man or babes are, but they seemed to be on their way to Sbarro :).

All in all, it was a lot of fun – and I promise to be done talking about it because who wants to hear about how much fun someone had at a party without them?

Oh, and if you want to see me be a complete goof of a dork in a video (and who wouldn’t want to see that?) head on over to The Lettered Cottage for a hilarious video. Does anyone else watch themselves in a video and think “Ew, do I really look like that? Is that how I sound?” Just checkin’ :).

Off to Blissdom!

If you’ve been following my incessant tweets on Twitter, you’re painfully aware that I’m heading off to Blissdom. This is my first time attending…and to be honest, I’m still kind of amazed I’m actually going. I’m excited, and looking forward to it, but I kind of feel like some crazy blogger lady possessed my hand which was attached to my computer mouse and said “Oh, you ARE going.”…and then proceeded to book a ticket. Besides, I had airline miles I could use, so that was the clincher.

Anyhoo…if you’re not going, please don’t feel left out. It’s one weekend, and it’s certainly not the end of the world if you can’t be there. And if you are going…please, please, please introduce yourself to me. I’ll be thrilled to meet you!

I'm sure I’ll tweet about it over the weekend, and will do a post with photos and highlights on Monday.

Have a great weekend! Go Colts! (I can only say that since my crush Brett Favre isn’t playing…whaaa)
