In An Accessory Rut?

Are you in an accessory rut? Take this little quiz to find out:

The accessories on your fireplace mantel:
A) Change almost monthly
B) Change once each season
C) Um, they’ve pretty much been the same for the last year
D) What’s the problem? I got it the way I liked it in 1987 and I’m sticking with it!

I’m guilty of at least “C”. What about you? Now, I don’t think it’s realistic for most people to be constantly changing up their accessories (a girl's gotta do the laundry sometime), but taking a step back and shaking things up every once in a while can be a very good thing.

For instance, this is how my piano has looked since…um…January 1 (cute little me as a newby blogger wrote about it in this post).

(WOWZA - That's a horrible picture...proof that you should NEVER take photos at night!)

The decor's been okay, it’s been fine, but it’s a little boring and I’m kind of tired of looking at it. So it occurred to me one day, “Wait a minute...I don’t have to be tired of looking at that…I can just change it!”. Yep…alert Oprah…I had a light bulb moment.

So I removed all of the accessories so I could start with a blank slate. I pulled a bunch of "stuff" out of my secret accessory closet (you know you have one too), and then added little by little.

With a little trial…and a little error...I created a new look that I like, simply by re-using "stuff" I had around the house.

What little nook have you been neglecting?

P.S. My walls aren't really that yellow...I blame it on zero sunlight today...and I have no excuse for the "before" picture...except for newby blogger naivete.

  1. I had one. I have no linen closet in the only very small bath. The top shelf is so high you can't put anything there. Whatever went up there were once in a blue moon I use things. I got a bug up my butt and decided I didn't need it for storage. So I did my first vignette up there. I love it!

Love your new piano look. Really like the little frame tied up with a bow!

  3. I did recently tweak my mantelpiece, which is unusual for me as often things do stay static (and gather dust!) for a number of years. I definitely need to create a magical go-to accessories closet!

  6. I tweak mine with the seasons but sometimes the tweaking doesn't quite work. It's continually a work in progress around here. As for your pics, I even think your before looks okay :). I have a TERRIBLE camera and a north-facing home so all of my pictures are awful. It's sad but I take joy in seeing less-than-perfect pics elsewhere. Your mantle is fab and I'm especially loving the cup in the little chair! I have a little chair on my mantle currently holding a raven. Love it.

  7. If anything sits in my much rearranged house for long, it would have to be nailed down so I couldn't move it! I love what you've done. Don't you just love to "shop" the house? What fun and cheap to boot!

  8. I think your BEFORE picture would be a major upgrade for me. ;) I just love your sense of style. It turned out beautifully. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm staring at my mantle and it's screaming for some creativity.

  10. Isn't it fun to rearrange your treasures? And a change is a nice lift for your spirits. Nice arrangement on the piano top.

  11. This post is a little nudge for me. I started playing with a couple of vignettes the other day...stealing from one place or another. Now I have two important spots that are completely empty. I just don't even notice for a day or two some times and then other times it's a complete obsession. :)

  12. I'm a C. I might add a witch at Halloween, but really the two looks I have are Christmas and 'rest of year'. I love your changes, especially the textury frame/wreath.
